Single-Cell Transcriptomics Training @ HSLS
On July 10, the HSLS Molecular Biology Information Service (HSLS-MBIS), in partnership with the Genomics Research Core (GRC) and the Center for Research Computing (CRC), offered a day-long workshop on single-cell transcriptomics research. Single-cell transcriptomics is a next-generation sequencing methodology that simultaneously measures, in individual cells and in high resolution, the messenger RNA concentrations of thousands of genes. The ultimate goal is to better understand individual cell functions, even in mixed cell populations.
Countdown to the New PubMed in 2020
The new PubMed will debut in January 2020, and the old PubMed will slowly fade into history. You can preview the improved search quality and usability on PubMed Labs, an experimental website where new features and tools are tested.

Graphic Medicine: Exhibit at Falk Library Uses Comics to Understand Health
Starting on August 19, stop by Falk Library to view the traveling exhibit, Graphic Medicine: Ill-Conceived and Well-Drawn! The National Library of Medicine exhibit features six panels that explore how comics can uniquely depict personal illness narratives and health information. Exhibit visitors can also peruse popular graphic medicine books, or stop by a creativity station to try their hand at drawing a medical symptom.

Ready to take a vacation and looking for some nonwork-related reading? Check out Falk Library’s print collection of leisure fiction and non-fiction books. Located on the main floor of the library, the Leisure Reading@HSLS Collection offers a revolving set of books, including titles from the New York Times Best Sellers list. New Exhibit at Falk Library: 1886 Syllabus Readings for a Medical Student
When Robert Bruce, the first principal of the newly chartered Western University of Pennsylvania (now University of Pittsburgh), indicated in his 1822 inaugural speech the need to have a medical college in Pittsburgh, it still took over 60 years for this historical event to come to fruition. The first attempts to interest influential people to create the medical school ended in failure. Even after a cholera epidemic in 1848, pressure from Pittsburgh area newspapers to establish a college in the public interest was ignored.
Farewell to the Systematic Review Workshop
For the past ten years, HSLS has hosted librarians from across the U.S. and Canada at our popular “Systematic Review Workshop: The Nuts and Bolts for Librarians.” This intensive 2.5-day workshop has been offered three times a year since November 2009, growing out of an internal working group to address the increasing number of requests from Pitt faculty for systematic reviews. Since then, the workshop has provided instruction to more than 700 participants, and brought rave reviews and recognition to HSLS.
Bluetooth Headphones and Computers Now at HSLS
Thanks to the magic of Bluetooth, you may not have to bring the usual number of cords with you on your next visit to Falk Library. All of the library’s public computers were recently upgraded to include Bluetooth capabilities, which means that it is now possible to transfer files between devices without the help of a flash drive or annoying cables.
To transfer files between a Falk Library computer and another device, first make sure that your device supports Bluetooth file sharing, its Bluetooth is on, and your device is discoverable. In Windows, pair your devices, and then click on Send or receive files via Bluetooth (found in the Devices section of the Settings menu) and follow the instructions in the dialogue box for file transfer. In macOS, open the Bluetooth File Exchange application; then select your device and file to transfer.
Another exciting feature that comes with the new Bluetooth desktops? Falk Library computers can now be paired with Bluetooth headphones, which have become increasingly popular in recent years. Forget yours at home? Don’t sweat it. Wireless Sony Bluetooth headphones are now available to borrow from the Technology Help Desk with a valid Pitt ID.

Timely Webinar on How to Search, Communicate, and Disseminate Your Research
On Wednesday, August 21, from 2-3 p.m., HSRProj (Health Services Research Projects in Progress) is offering an introductory webinar, “How to Search, Communicate, and Disseminate Your Research,” that explores effective search, communication, and dissemination strategies and provides an overview of resources publicly available through the National Library of Medicine for public health and health services and policy researchers to use in their work.
Treasures from the Rare Book Room: Ars Anatomica
Leonard Baskin’s Ars Anatomica: a medical fantasia, thirteen drawings (1972) is the most recent addition to our historical collection. The book was donated by Dr. Brian Primack, the former dean of Pitt’s Honors College. The portfolio includes thirteen anatomical drawings commissioned by Editions Medicina Rara from a contemporary artist, Leonard Baskin (1922-2000).
