OpenRefine is a free, open source tool for working with messy tabular data. It runs offline in a web browser and allows for reproducibility in data cleaning. Any student, faculty member, or researcher who works with data can benefit from learning to use this powerful tool.

Exploring and Cleaning Data with OpenRefine is a hands-on class that will meet in person in Falk Library’s brand-new classroom.

Upon completing this class, you should be able to:

  • create a new project
  • explore the data through sorting, filtering, and faceting functions
  • complete basic data cleaning such as splitting or combining cells and clustering to find and fix inconsistent data entries
  • create JSON scripts

Class materials will be made available to class registrants. This class will not be recorded. No previous experience is required.

If you are unable to attend this scheduled class, consider requesting a customized instruction session for your course, group, or department.

*HSLS classes are open to University of Pittsburgh faculty, staff, and students, as well as UPMC residents and fellows.
