“Evaluating Journals: Discovering Where to Publish” is offered as an online session:
Tuesday, January 24, 2023, 1-2 p.m.
Register for Evaluating Journals: Discovering Where to Publish*
This session will cover a wide range of publishing topics to help you find a relevant and reputable journal to publish your work. Learn how to put your article manuscript into a framework, using tools to find journals based on your publishing preferences and funder requirements. Evaluate journals based upon best practices and ethical publishing standards to avoid predatory journals.
Participants can expect to learn about new resources for making decisions about finding and evaluating journals. Although this class is focused primarily on article publication, many of the topics covered can also be applied to research outputs related to your manuscript, including datasets, preprints, protocols, and software. Having a foundational knowledge of open access, copyright, and publishing best practices will help to answer the question, “Where should I publish?”
After this class, you will be able to:
- Describe how to put your manuscript into a framework to identify relevant journals
- Assess the quality of a journal based on factors such as journal operations, discoverability, transparency, and trustworthiness
- Explain the harm, impact, and characteristics of predatory journals
- Understand how journal evaluation frameworks can be limited
If you are unable to attend this scheduled class, consider requesting a customized instruction session for your course, group, or department. You can also check the HSLS online class calendar for many other educational opportunities in the spring semester.
*HSLS classes are open to University of Pittsburgh faculty, staff, and students, as well as UPMC residents and fellows. A valid email address is required to register.
