The historical collections at HSLS represent more than half of the library’s print collection and include first or limited editions of medical texts published between the 15th and 20th centuries, as well as manuscripts, scrapbooks, and local pamphlets. Research into the history of medical sciences is also supported by our circulating history of medicine books, which include modern publications examining the development of medicine and medical research, as well as historical accounts of health professionals and hospitals.
All of our rare books and special collections are discoverable through the library’s online catalog, PittCat, and the history of medicine website.
The older titles, published between 1496 and 1945, form the protected collection of early medical texts, manuals, textbooks, and research treatises—which do not circulate due to their age and fragility. Patrons can use them in our Rare Book Room by appointment. Scheduling a visit is quite easy and can be done by email or phone. We are always happy to accommodate visitors.
This semester, the circulating history of medicine books, currently in storage, are scheduled to come back to Falk Library and will be integrated with the Medical Humanities Collection. The history of medicine website will also soon feature some new digital resources.
In October, we will offer one day a week with late afternoon and evening hours when it will be possible to visit the Rare Book Room without an appointment to chat with the librarian about your research needs, as well as to see the book of the month. Each month a selected book will be available to view, touch, and ponder on its past.
Contact History of Medicine with questions or to schedule a research visit to the Rare Book Room.
