MolBio/Human Genetics Student Accepted into All of Us Data Fellows Program

HSLS is pleased to announce that Alexis Kiyanda, a student in the School of Public Health, has been accepted into the All of Us Data Fellows Program after gaining valuable skills through “Analyzing Health Data with the All of Us Research Program” (HUGEN 2081), a graduate-level course developed collaboratively by the HSLS Molecular Biology Information Service and the Human Genetics department.

Launched in fall 2025, the course provides students with the skills and knowledge to navigate the All of Us database effectively. Emphasizing health equity and precision medicine research, it enables students to explore diverse U.S. population data and generate interesting research questions.

Alexis stated that taking this course gave her access to skills she would not normally have encountered through other coursework, which will support her long-term research goals.

Git and GitHub: Essential Tools for Biomedical Research and Collaboration

Git and GitHub are most widely recognized as tools for software developers, but they can also be valuable tools for modern biomedical research. These platforms enable researchers to manage code and data efficiently while fostering collaboration across teams and institutions. With built-in version control and sharing capabilities, they ensure reproducibility and transparency.

How Git and GitHub Can Support Your Research

  • Reproducibility: Every change to your analysis scripts and datasets is tracked, creating a transparent history that supports reproducible science.
  • Collaboration: Work together seamlessly by sharing repositories with colleagues worldwide. Multiple contributors can edit, review, and merge updates without losing progress.
  • Data & Code Sharing: Host scripts and data files, documentation, and workflows in one place, making it easier for teams to access, share, and contribute.
  • Open Science: Publish repositories publicly to accelerate discovery and promote transparency in research practices.

Key Milestones in the History of Public Health

The public health system in the United States began as a series of episodic responses to real and immediate health threats—and in many ways, it still is. Approaching public health problems with a historical perspective can be more than just an indulgence in reflection; it can be a stark reminder that although change is difficult, it can be done. Join the C.F. Reynolds Medical History Society on Tuesday, January 20, for “Beyond the Broad Street Pump: Insights into the History of Public Health,” a lecture by Jamie A. Sokol, MPH, looking at key milestones in public health history as we trace its roots from the time of Hippocrates to 20th-century public health achievements. From epidemics to social and political reform, we’ll explore the ever-changing public health landscape—and re-emphasize the importance of an interdisciplinary approach to solving public health problems.
