Happening at Falk Library in March

Visitors to Falk Library, located in Alan Magee Scaife Hall, are encouraged to check out these opportunities and displays:

March Medical Mystery Month

Monday, March 3 through Monday, March 31

Fun prizes are in store as you solve mysteries around Falk Library this month! Pick up a scavenger hunt clue sheet at the Main Desk to get started. These mystery activities can be completed through one or more visits to the library. Check the March Medical Mystery Month event page for details about the activities and prizes.

Escape Room: The Case of the Charming Clinician

Wednesday, March 19, 12-1:30 p.m., Library Classroom

A new health product, the Sensational Silver Smoothie, has recently gone viral! Influencers are endorsing it, customers are loving it, and sales are through the roof… but is everything as it seems? In this escape room game, you’ll work as a team to race against the clock – and competing teams – to solve a series of puzzles and uncover the truth about this smoothie sensation.

Participants in this event will receive an extra entry in our March Medical Mystery Month prize drawing.

Registration for the event is requested; walk-in participants are welcome if space permits. Light refreshments will be provided.

On Display

70 Years of “Scope and Scalpel” (Display Cases, Main Floor)

Memorabilia ranging from the first med student production of “PSM IV” in 1955 to the most recent productions are on display in anticipation of the PittMed Class of 2025’s spring production this May. Playbills, posters, video, and audio recordings from the Special Collections of Falk Library show off the spoofed movies and TV series over seven decades.

These memorabilia accompany an array of digitized production materials. Selected ones are presented in the Scope and Scalpel online exhibit and more digitized materials are available through the Scope and Scalpel collection finding aid.

Nine Ages of Man Sculpture (Study Area, Main Floor)

Nine Ages of Man is a Randolf W. Johnston work from 1970 that was donated to the School of Medicine in 1984 and has been on view for visitors to Alan Magee Scaife Hall. During building construction, the sculpture is on loan for temporary display in Falk Library.

Fundamentals of Successful Surgery (Rare Book Room Window Display, Lower Floor)

This exhibit highlights the founders of different elements of surgery, from Andreas Vesalius’s contributions to anatomy, to the various contributions of Ambroise Paré, Horace Wells, and Joseph Lister. The exhibit also showcases surgery during wars (World War I and World War II) and how each war launched a different type of surgical intervention.

While our focus is on the Pitt Health Sciences community, all Pitt affiliates are welcome to participate. Unless otherwise noted, all activities and displays are available during Falk Library Operating Hours.
