Welcome to Stefanie Allen who will intern in the reference department as part of the HSLS Partners Program with the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Information Science (SIS). Allen received a B.A. in International Public Health & Development from Mount Holyoke College in May 2008.
Congratulations to Mary Jo Dorsey, reference librarian, who has completed her PhD in the Library and Information Science program at the University of Pittsburgh SIS. Dorsey’s dissertation is titled “Modeling the Consumer Health Information-Seeking Behaviors of Primary Care Physicians who Treat Elderly Depressed Patients and their Caregivers .”
Congratulations to Daniel Higgins, circulation specialist, who recently graduated from the University of Pittsburgh’s SIS Master of Library and Information Science program.
Welcome to Evone Jeffries, reference department intern, who is currently enrolled in the Master of Library and Information Science program at SIS. Jeffries has a B.A. in Psychology from Central State University and has just been named a Medical Library Association/National Library of Medicine Spectrum Scholar.
Technical Services welcomes Jean Sant, who is currently enrolled in the Master of Library and Information Science program at SIS. Sant has a B.G.S. in Management from Brigham Young University and has experience working in academic libraries.
Charlie Wessel has been appointed head of hospital services. In this position, he oversees information policies and services at HSLS libraries at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and UPMC Shadyside and continues to coordinate HSLS information instruction and support at other UPMC hospitals. Wessel has been coordinator of affiliated hospital services since 1998 and has worked at HSLS in other roles since 1986.
Congratulations to the following HSLS employees who have reached milestone anniversaries in University employment. Ten years of service: Jeffrey Husted, acquisitions manager. Twenty years of service: Nelson Galloway, technical services assistant, Paul Galvanek, systems analyst, and Michael Yaklich, serials manager.

John Erlen, history of medicine librarian, published “Recent Dissertations (Bibliography)” in The American Indian Quarterly, 32 (3): 372-85, Summer 2008 with co-author Jay Toth. Erlen also reviewed “Race and Medicine in Nineteenth and Early Twentieth Century America” by Todd Savitt, OH: Kent State University Press, 2007, in The Register of the Kentucky Historical Society, 105(3): 516-17, 2007.
Leslie Czechowski, assistant director for Collections and Technical Services, published “Subject Access Points in the MARC Record and Archival Finding Aid: Enough or Too Many?”
in Journal of Archival Organization, 5(4): 51-59, 2007 with co-author Elizabeth Cox, special formats cataloger, Southern Illinois University in Carbondale.
Patricia Weiss, reference and information technology librarian, co-authored “Supporting Emerging Disciplines with e-Communities: Needs and Benefits” in Journal of Medical Internet Research, 10(2): e19, 2008. Co-authors, all from the University of Pittsburgh, were Heiko Spallek1, Brian S Butler2, Titus K Schleyer1, Xiaoqing Wang2, Thankam P Thyvalikakath1, Courtney L Hatala1, and Reza A Naderi1.
