The University of Pittsburgh’s Open Access Agreement with Wiley is very close to its annual limit on the number of articles eligible for APC-free (article processing charge-free) open access publishing. As stated on the library’s Open Access Publishing Agreements page and in the conditional funding communications from Wiley, once this limit is reached, newly accepted articles, no matter the submission date, will NOT be covered under the agreement and corresponding authors will be responsible for any invoice received from the publisher. The library’s Open Access Publishing Agreements page has noted the annual limit since the announcement of our agreement in 2024.
We apologize for any inconvenience, but Wiley’s prescribed workflow calls for us to conditionally approve funding requests for articles that have not yet been accepted for publication; however funding cannot be reserved for articles still under peer/editorial review.
We will update the Open Access Publishing Agreements page as soon as the limit is reached.
In the meantime, please note that an APC for an article is covered under our agreement only when all four of the following conditions are met:
- The manuscript is formally accepted for publication,
- The author’s university affiliation is re-verified at the time of acceptance for publication,
- The author selects an open access license and signs the publisher’s agreement,
- The number of articles published under the agreement has not reached our institutional limit for the year.
Please don’t hesitate to contact us with any questions. If needed, we can help you explore alternative publication venues or provide input for writing publication costs into future grant budgets.
