Open Science Framework (OSF) is a free, open-source platform that can help scientists make their research more reproducible, more efficient, and more collaborative. OSF enables research teams to bring together data, documentation, workflows, and code all in one place by providing free and secure data storage with plugins for popular third-party tools such as Dropbox, Google Drive, and GitHub. While OSF is a valuable tool at any stage of the research process, it is especially useful for disseminating results and sharing data or code.
In this workshop, we will demonstrate OSF, discuss how open science principles work in practice in our fields, and construct an example OSF project site together. Participants of this workshop will learn:
- How to discover and download data for re-use through OSF
- How to manage collaborators and permissions for a research project
- Best practices for creating and organizing OSF projects, including research data management and version control
- How to connect OSF to tools like ORCID, GitHub, and Zotero
- How to use OSF to make your research more FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable)
- When OSF might not be a good choice for your project, and what to do instead
This workshop is open to anyone working on or preparing for research, either solo or on a team. Sample datasets and documentation will be provided for the hands-on exercises, but participants should feel free to bring materials from their own research if they wish to test out OSF for their project. No previous workshop experience is necessary, but this would be an excellent follow-up class for anyone who has attended Introduction to Research Data Management, File Naming Best Practices, or other data-centric HSLS classes.
