HSLS librarians were active participants in the Medical Library Association’s Annual Meeting held in Chicago, Il, from May 3-8, 2019.

Paper Presentations

Kate Flewelling, NNLM MAR Executive Director, presented “Distracted in the Library: Supporting Staff and Patrons with ADHD.”

Lightning Talks

Carrie Iwema, Coordinator of Basic Science Services, presented “Collaborating for Classes: Training Initiatives for the Mutual Benefit of Libraries and Their Institutional Partners.” Co-authors were Melissa Ratajeski, Coordinator of Data Services, and Ansuman Chattopadhyay, Assistant Director for Molecular Biology Information Services.

Melissa Ratajeski, Coordinator of Data Services, presented “Practicing What We Preach: Making Our Own Research Data Open Access.” Co-author was Carrie Iwema, Coordinator of Basic Science Services.

Special Immersion Sessions

Melissa Ratajeski, Coordinator of Data Services, taught “Reach out to Elevate Your Research Data Management Services.” Co-instructors were Nina Exner, Research Data Librarian, Virginia Commonwealth University, Jessica Koos, Health Sciences Librarian, Stony Brook University, Shannon Sheridan, National Library of Medicine Associate Fellow, Drexel Universities, et al.

Elaina Vitale, NNLM MAR Academic and Data Services Coordinator, taught “Elevating Health Equity Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon.” Co-instructors were Alicia Lillich, NNLM MCR, and Aimee Gogan, NLM.

Poster Presentations

Melissa Ratajeski, Coordinator of Data Services, presented “Outreach Strategies and Researchers’ Motivations for Sharing Data through a Data Catalog.” Co-authors were Katherine Akers, Biomedical Research and Data Specialist, Wayne State University, Nicole Contaxis, Data Catalog Coordinator, NYU Health Sciences, Megan Del Baglivo, Metadata Librarian, Health Sciences & Human Services Library University of Maryland, Baltimore, et al.

Members of the Data Catalog Collaboration Project presented “A Multisite Collaboration to Improve Data Curation and Discovery in Academic Health Sciences Centers: The Data Catalog Collaboration Project.” HSLS co-authors were Helenmary Sheridan, Data Services Librarian, Angie Zack, Knowledge Integration Lead, Joel Marchewka, Web and Application Programmer, Carrie Iwema, Coordinator of Basic Science Services, and Melissa Ratajeski, Coordinator of Data Services. Sheridan also first authored “Quick, Cheap, Fun: Activities Designed to Gather Feedback and Engage with Patrons.” Co-authors were Iwema and Ratajeski.

Elaina Vitale, NNLM MAR Academic and Data Services Coordinator, presented “Collaboration and Innovation: NNLM’s Nationwide Online Wikipedia Edit-a-Thons.” Co-authors were Aimee Gogan, NNLM/NLM, Karen Coghlan, NNLM/NLM, Nora Franco, NNLM/NLM, et al.

Continuing Education Class

Elaina Vitale, NNLM MAR Academic and Data Services Coordinator, taught “Advancing Health Equity through Evidence-Based Public Health: How to Find the Evidence.” Co-instructor was Derek Johnson, NNLM GMR.

Other Conference Activities

Barbara Epstein, HSLS Director, Renae Barger, Associate Director for Research, Instruction, and Clinical Information Services, Fran Yarger, Associate Director for Digital Library Services, Kate Flewelling, NNLM MAR Executive Director, Jen Jones, TEC Executive Director, and John LaDue, NWSO Executive Director, attended the NNLM Steering Committee meeting.

Carrie Iwema, Coordinator of Basic Science Services, attended the Education Steering Committee meeting, was liaison to the Education Annual Programming Committee, and was awarded the 2019 President’s Award as a member of the Education Steering Committee.

Melissa Ratajeski, Coordinator of Data Services, chaired the Chapter Council meeting, attended the MLA Board of Directors’ meeting as a member, and was a panelist on the Data Catalog Collaboration Information Session.

Rose Turner, Coordinator of Liaison Services, served as a member of the Awards Committee.

Elaina Vitale, NNLM MAR Academic and Data Services Coordinator, was named a 2019-2020 MLA Rising Star and was named Chair of the Broering Hispanic Heritage Grant Jury for 2019-2020.
