HSLS Participation at the Medical Library Association’s Annual Conference

HSLS librarians were active participants in the Medical Library Association’s Annual Meeting held in Toronto, Canada, from May 13-18.

Contributed Papers

Julia Dahm, technology services librarian, presented Clinical eCompanion: Development of a Point-of-Care Information Tool.” Co-authors were Charlie Wessel, head of research initiatives, and John LaDue, head of knowledge integration.

Poster Presentations

Carrie L. Iwema, information specialist in molecular biology, presented “InfoBundles: Using Free, Simple Web Tools to Dramatically Enhance Online Information Retrieval.” Co-authors were Angela Zack, web and application programmer, and Ansuman Chattopadhyay, head of molecular biology information service.

Rose Turner, research and instruction librarian, presented “Leaving the Lecture Behind: Putting PubMed Instruction into the Hands of the Students.” Co-authors were Andrea Ketchum, research and instruction librarian/scholarly communication liaison, Melissa Ratajeski, coordinator of data management services, Ester Saghafi, reference librarian, and Charlie Wessel, head of research initiatives.

Melissa Ratajeski, coordinator of data management services, presented “DMPTool Customization for Researchers Writing Data Management Plans (DMPs).” Co-author was Carrie Iwema, information specialist in molecular biology.

Kate Flewelling, outreach coordinator, NN/LM Middle Atlantic Region, presented “They Like Us! They Really Like Us! Using Appreciative Inquiry to Evaluate Outreach to Unaffiliated Health Professionals.”

Lightning Talks

Michelle Burda, network and advocacy coordinator, NN/LM Middle Atlantic Region, presented “Mentoring: Making a Difference.” Co-author was Tami Hartzell.

Carrie L. Iwema, information specialist in molecular biology, presented “Search.bioPreprint: A Tool for Discovering Cutting Edge, Yet-to-Be Published or Reviewed Biomedical Research Articles.” Co-authors were John LaDue, head of knowledge integration, and Ansuman Chattopadhyay, head of molecular biology information service. Iwema was also a co-author for “Crafting a Mosaic: Partnerships between Health Sciences Librarians, Postdocs, and More.” Other authors were Karen Gau, Pamela Dillon, and Teraya Donaldson.

Barbara Epstein, HSLS director, was named a Fellow of the Medical Library Association (FMLA).

Carrie Iwema, information specialist in molecular biology, and Melissa Ratajeski, coordinator of data management services, received the President’s Award for their outstanding work implementing a new way of selecting and providing programming for Mosaic ’16.

Carrie Iwema, information specialist in molecular biology, received a Medical Informatics Section/MLA Career Development Grant.

Other Conference Activities

Barbara Epstein, HSLS director, began her one-year term as President-elect of MLA. As such, she also serves on the Executive Committee of the MLA Board of Directors, and is the Board Liaison to the Government Relations Committee, and the National Planning Committee for the MLA 2018 Annual Meeting to be held in Atlanta, Georgia.

Carrie Iwema, information specialist in molecular biology, was Incoming Chair of the Continuing Education Committee, Lightning Talks Coordinator for the Joint MLA/CHLA/ABSC/ICLC Planning Committee, and a Research Section paper judge.

Andrea Ketchum, research and instruction librarian/scholarly communication liaison, and Michele Klein-Fedyshin, research and clinical instruction librarian, co-chaired MLA’s national Ad Hoc Committee to Review Core Clinical Journals.

At the close of the MLA annual meeting Melissa Ratajeski, coordinator of data management services, began her three year term as Chapter Council Chair and a member of the MLA Board of Directors as the Chapter Council Liaison.

Nancy Tannery, senior associate director, chaired the Leadership and Management Section.
