Barbara Epstein, HSLS director, visited Washington DC on June 15 and 16 as a member of the Joint Legislative Task Force of the Medical Library Association and the Association of Academic Health Sciences Libraries. After briefings from David Moore, Senior Director of Government Relations at the Association of American Medical Colleges, Betsy Humphreys, Acting Director of the National Library of Medicine (NLM), and Jerry Sheehan, NLM Director for Policy Development, the Task Force split into three teams to visit congressional offices to advocate support for NIH and NLM. Epstein visited the offices of Congressman Mike Doyle (D-PA14), and Senators Robert P. Casey, Jr. (D-PA) and Patrick Toomey (R-PA).

Rebecca Abromitis and Linda Hartman, reference librarians, presented “Velcro Instruction: 7 Techniques to Make Learning Stick” as an NN/LM Middle Atlantic Region Boost Box Webinar on May 26, 2015.

Michelle Burda, network and advocacy coordinator, NN/LM Middle Atlantic Region, presented “Food 4 Thought: Exploring Nutrition Information Resources,” at the Where to Turn Resource Fair in Pittsburgh, PA, on May 5, 2015.

Lydia Collins, consumer health coordinator, NN/LM Middle Atlantic Region, presented “Encouraging Curiosity with NLM’s Online Toybox: Health and Science Resources for K-5 Students” and “Engaging, Encouraging and Enabling Middle and High School Students to Explore Health and Science from the National Library of Medicine” at the American Library Association Annual Conference in San Francisco, CA, on June 27 and 28, 2015, respectively. At the same conference, Collins, along with Anita Kinney, Prince George’s County Memorial Library System, and Christian Minter, ‎NLM Associate Fellow at Welch Library, Johns Hopkins University, presented “Public Health and Public Libraries: Librarians as Health Literacy First Responders” on June 29.

Kate Flewelling, outreach coordinator, NN/LM Middle Atlantic Region, presented “National Network of Libraries of Medicine—Services & Resources” at the June meeting of the PA Tobacco Control Coalition at the Pennsylvania College of Technology in Williamsport, PA, on June 11, 2015; “Public Libraries as Preparedness Partners” at the “Emergency Preparedness Resources in Pennsylvania—What Do You Need and How Do You Get It?!” Workshop at the Pennsylvania Public Health Preparedness Summit in State College, PA, on June 16, 2015; and Flewelling taught “PubMed and the Evidence-Based Universe” for the NY-NJ Chapter of MLA at New York Institute of Technology, Manhattan Campus, in New York, NY, on June 26, 2015.
