Kudos

HSLS staff and faculty raised money for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation by participating in the 13th annual Lee National Denim Day. In exchange for a cash donation, staff and faculty members were permitted to wear blue jeans to work on October 3, 2008.

Publications

John Erlen, history of medicine librarian, published “Dissertation List” in The American Indian Quarterly, 32(4): 549-61, Fall 2008 with co-author Jay Toth and “New Dissertations” in Nursing History Review, 17: 251-53, 2008. Erlen also reviewed “Covenant of Care: Newark Beth Israel and the Jewish Hospital in America” by Alan and Deborah Kraut, NJ: Rutgers University Press, 2007, in The Watermark: Newsletter of the Archivists and Librarians in the History of the Health Sciences, 31(4): 118-119, 2008.

Charlie Wessel, head of hospital services, co-authored “Parenteral Calcium for Intensive Care Unit Patients” in Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews 2008, Issue 4. Co-authors were Raquel Forsythe1, Timothy Billiar1, Derek Angus2, and Matthew Rosengart1

Presentations

Barbara Epstein, director, and Nancy Tannery, associate director for User Services presented a poster “Innovative Information Portals: Molecular Biology and Clinical Resources” at the Association of American Medical Colleges annual meeting Oct. 31–Nov. 5, in San Antonio, CA. Co-authors all from HSLS were Ansuman Chattopadhyay, Carrie Iwema, John LaDue, Charles Wessel, and Fran Yarger.

Fran Yarger, assistant director of Computing Services, presented a talk “Thinking Outside the (Search) Box: Enterprise Search at the University of Pittsburgh and Vivisimo” at Science 2008, University of Pittsburgh, on October 3, 2008. Yarger’s co-presenter was Raul Valdes-Perez, Chief Executive Officer, Vivismo.
