Inspired by the Mozilla Open Leaders program, PREreview created a peer review training program, called the PREreview Open Reviewers, that does the following things:

  1. Trains early career researchers (ECRs), mainly graduate students and post-docs, on how to write constructive manuscript reviews
  2. Pairs ECRs with journal Editors who provide mentorship and feedback to publish 2 manuscript reviews
  3. Adds researchers to an “Advanced Reviewer” list that Editors refer to when selecting manuscript invites after the successful completion of the 3 stages of the program
  4. Helps you build an invaluable network and community with other ECRs, PIs, and Editors!
  5. More in their Open Roadmap.

The Application to be part of the program is now open, and will close on September 7. For this pilot they are focusing on a small group of participants so that they can gather feedback to improve the program and scale it to global communities. The pilot begins the week of October 19, 2020, and runs through February 11, 2021, with a break from December 21, 2020, through January 9, 2021. They are offering three different opportunities to engage with their program, so please check out the application for more information. Please apply if you are interested in participating or share this content with others you know who might.

Core to their mission is to help create racial equity in peer review. One of the ways they are going to do this in this pilot is by having 50% of their mentee slots reserved for individuals who self-identify as underrepresented racial minorities as defined by the NSF. But that’s not enough. Please check out their racial equity statement (in this folder) to see what else they are doing!
