Over 3,000 visitors viewed the panels and video display in the main study area of the library.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8879\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8879\" style=\"width: 226px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8879\" src=\"https:\/\/info.hsls.pitt.edu\/updatereport\/files\/2015\/10\/DavisSep172015.jpg\" alt=\"DavisSep172015\" width=\"226\" height=\"187\" srcset=\"https:\/\/info.hsls.pitt.edu\/updatereport\/files\/2015\/10\/DavisSep172015.jpg 400w, https:\/\/info.hsls.pitt.edu\/updatereport\/files\/2015\/10\/DavisSep172015-300x248.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 226px) 100vw, 226px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8879\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Adam Davis<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In conjunction with the exhibit, Adam Davis gave a special lecture on Thursday, September 17, entitled &#8220;Background to the Discovery of DNA.&#8221; Davis recounted the early history of biologists and other scientists and their important, sometimes accidental, discoveries that built the foundation for the double-helix structure we are familiar with today. Davis earned his Master\u2019s Degree in biological anthropology from the University of Pittsburgh. He currently teaches History of Science at Duquesne University and is associate professor of biology at the Community College of Allegheny County.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Following the lecture, a reception was held in Falk Library for visitors to socialize, view the exhibit, and enjoy a few snacks. His lecture, &#8220;Erythropoietin: A Case History\u2014The Promise and Perils of Harnessing Nature,&#8221; looked at the progress from bloodletting and transfusions, to the FDA approval of EPO\u2014a success story with a dark side in industry and politics.
