This publication compares how the agreements of 12 publishers permit authors to meet the requirements of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Public Access Policy.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to submitting articles to PubMed Central, authors must include the PubMed Central reference number (PMCID) in NIH applications, proposals, and progress reports when citing an article that falls under the policy and is authored or co-authored by the investigator, or arose from the investigator\u2019s NIH award. The PMCID is different from the PMID which many researchers are familiar with.
