And so they are.<\/p>\n<p>If you are one of the National Library of Medicine\u2019s 1,443 admirers and visited its page during the first week of May, you could have listened to Director Donald A.B. Lindberg\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nlm.nih.gov\/medlineplus\/podcast\/podcast050310.mp3\" target=\"_blank\">podcast<\/a> about progress on electronic health records or learned about a recent Friends of the NLM conference, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fnlm.org\/Events-2010-Conf.html\" target=\"_blank\">The ePatient: Digital and Genomic Technologies for Personalized Health Care<\/a><\/em>. Soon after the page debuted in February, you could have learned about NLM\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nlm.nih.gov\/news\/people_finder.html\" target=\"_blank\">Haiti Earthquake People Locator<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And you\u2019d know that NLM\u2019s favorite pages include that of its own <a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ncbi.nlm?ref=sgm\" target=\"_blank\">National Center for Biotechnology Information<\/a> (NCBI), plus those of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/nih.gov\" target=\"_blank\">NIH <\/a>and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/CDC\" target=\"_blank\">CDC<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>NLM has been expanding its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nlm.nih.gov\/socialmedia\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">social media presence<\/a>. You can now choose among 9 Twitter and 7 RSS feeds, in addition to the aforementioned <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nlm.nih.gov\/medlineplus\/directorscomments.html\" target=\"_blank\">Director\u2019s Comments podcast<\/a>. First, Twitter:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> Some feeds are more active than others. Recent oil spill, earthquake, and H1N1 headlines have given <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/NLM_SIS\" target=\"_blank\">@NLM_SIS<\/a> (Specialized Information Services in toxicology, environmental health, and disaster information) plenty to tweet about. For a steady stream of consumer health news, follow <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/medlineplus4you\" target=\"_blank\">@medlineplus4you<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/NCBI\" target=\"_blank\">@NCBI<\/a> just started in March, will keep users informed about new features in NCBI\u2019s literature, molecular biology, and genetics <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">resources<\/a>, along with news and newly published research. Sample tweet topics: GenBank Release 177.0 and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/geo\/roadmap\/epigenomics\/\" target=\"_blank\">Roadmap Epigenomics data<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li> Feeds such as <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/NLMGlobalHealth\" target=\"_blank\">@NLMGlobalHealth<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/nlm_harrypotter\" target=\"_blank\">@nlm_harrypotter<\/a> and are linked to specific NLM exhibitions (which, by the way, have their own <a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/NLMExhibitions\" target=\"_blank\">Facebook pages<\/a>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nlm.nih.gov\/listserv\/rss_podcasts.html\" target=\"_blank\">RSS list<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> Again, activity level varies. <a href=\"http:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/rss.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">DailyMed Drug Label Updates<\/a>, marketed drug information in a structured format, posts dozens of items a day, while the last <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nlm.nih.gov\/rss\/alert.rss\" target=\"_blank\">NIH Clinical Alerts and Advisories<\/a> posting was in 2007.<\/li>\n<li> Your HSLS librarians are avid readers of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nlm.nih.gov\/rss\/techbull.rss\" target=\"_blank\">NLM Technical Bulletin<\/a>, which keeps us one step ahead of our patrons.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Don\u2019t forget that you can <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/bookshelf\/br.fcgi?book=helppubmed&amp;part=pubmedhelp#pubmedhelp.Saving_searches_as_R\" target=\"_blank\">create an RSS feed from any PubMed search<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nlm.nih.gov\/rss\/techbull.rss\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-3419\" src=\"https:\/\/info.hsls.pitt.edu\/updatereport\/files\/2010\/06\/NLM_tech-300x88.jpg\" alt=\"NLM_tech\" width=\"300\" height=\"88\" srcset=\"https:\/\/info.hsls.pitt.edu\/updatereport\/files\/2010\/06\/NLM_tech-300x88.jpg 300w, https:\/\/info.hsls.pitt.edu\/updatereport\/files\/2010\/06\/NLM_tech.jpg 472w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And if <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/nlm_harrypotter\" target=\"_blank\">@nlm_harrypotter<\/a> doesn\u2019t satisfy your craving for the supernatural, try <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/support\/reader\/bin\/answer.py?hl=en&amp;answer=164681\" target=\"_blank\">Google Reader\u2019s Sort by magic setting<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>~ Patricia Weiss<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>You\u2019d expect the largest medical library in the world to be on Facebook.
