The exhibit is open during regular library <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hsls.pitt.edu\/about\/libraries\/falk\" target=\"_blank\">hours<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Through contemporary and historical images, the exhibit tells the stories of four pioneering African American surgeons and educators who exemplify excellence in their fields:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nlm.nih.gov\/exhibition\/aframsurgeons\/canady.html\" target=\"_blank\">Alexa I. Canady, MD<\/a>, pediatric neurosurgeon, Sacred Heart Medical Group, Pensacola, Fla.<\/li>\n<li> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nlm.nih.gov\/exhibition\/aframsurgeons\/leffall.html\" target=\"_blank\">LaSalle D. Leffall Jr., MD<\/a>, Charles R. Drew Professor of Surgery, Howard University College of Medicine, Washington, D.C.<\/li>\n<li> The late <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nlm.nih.gov\/exhibition\/aframsurgeons\/organ.html\" target=\"_blank\">Claude H. Organ Jr., MD<\/a>, chairman, surgical residency program, University of California\/Davis-University of California, San Francisco East Bay Surgery Department.<\/li>\n<li> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nlm.nih.gov\/exhibition\/aframsurgeons\/scott.html\" target=\"_blank\">Rosalyn P. Scott, MD<\/a>, associate professor and vice chair, Department of Surgery and chief, Division of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery, Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science, Los Angeles.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In honor of this exhibit, a career panel of African American surgeons with connections to the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine will take place from noon-1 p.m., Friday, January 15, in Scaife Hall, Lecture Room 3.\u00a0 Velma Scantlebury, MD, transplant surgeon, professor of surgery, assistant dean for community education, director of the division of transplantation, and director, University of South Alabama Regional Transplant Center, will moderate.<\/p>\n<p>During the exhibit, an additional photo and biography display in the library honors African American surgeons with University of Pittsburgh and UPMC connections.<\/p>\n<p>Opening Doors is a collaborative effort between the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nlm.nih.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">National Library of Medicine<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.africanamericanculture.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History and Culture<\/a> in Baltimore.<\/p>\n<p>The exhibit and events are free and open to the public.
