As part of this effort, HSLS instructors have adapted their <a href=\"https:\/\/info.hsls.pitt.edu\/updatereport\/march-2021\/accessible-zoom-classes-and-meetings\/\">methods when teaching via Zoom<\/a> to ensure that all virtual learners can attend and participate in live <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hsls.pitt.edu\/calendar\">HSLS classes<\/a>. HSLS has also made accessibility improvements to recorded instructional videos hosted on Panopto (also known as Pitt Video\/Lecture Capture). If you create and share Panopto videos, try implementing the following practices used by HSLS to create a more inclusive learning environment:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ensure the video is properly <a href=\"https:\/\/support.panopto.com\/s\/article\/ASR-Generated-Captions\">captioned<\/a>. Closed captions make your video accessible to the hearing-impaired community and can also improve the viewing experience for all users.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Any <a href=\"https:\/\/support.panopto.com\/s\/article\/Attach-a-PDF-to-a-Video\">PDFs<\/a> that you include in your video stream should be formatted as fully accessible files. You should also verbally introduce the PDF so that visually impaired users know that the file is available.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>When <a href=\"https:\/\/support.panopto.com\/s\/article\/Embed-a-Web-Page-Using-the-Basic-Editor\">embedding web pages<\/a> into your video stream, your video narration should first state that the video will pause when the web page appears. You should also instruct viewers to press \u201cplay\u201d when they are done previewing the page. This will keep visually impaired users in the loop and prevent confusion about the automatic pause in video playback.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Similarly, if you <a href=\"https:\/\/support.panopto.com\/s\/article\/Embed-a-YouTube-Video-into-a-Panopto-Session\">embed a YouTube video<\/a> in your video stream, make sure you verbally introduce the video and enable the \u201cauto play\u201d feature for the YouTube video.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/support.panopto.com\/s\/article\/How-to-Add-a-Quiz-to-a-Video\">Quizzes<\/a> are a useful Panopto feature but they can present some challenges for visually impaired learners. If you\u2019re including a quiz in your video, you should verbally introduce the quiz and instruct users to press \u201cContinue\u201d when they are done with the quiz. You should also avoid enabling the \u201cblock advancing in the video until done answering this quiz\u201d option in case accessibility issues arise with the quiz.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition to these standard practices, HSLS also offers individualized <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hsls.pitt.edu\/accommodations-classes-workshops\">accommodations<\/a> to class registrants.<\/p>\n<p>To learn more about the EIT Policy and how you can implement accessibility improvements in your own work, visit the Office for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion\u2019s page on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.diversity.pitt.edu\/disability-access\/digital-accessibility\">digital accessibility<\/a>.
