Here we introduce another iteration of the <a href=\"https:\/\/asapbio.org\/preprint-info\">preprint movement<\/a>\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchsquare.com\/\">Research Square<\/a>, a multidisciplinary platform that helps researchers share their work early, gather feedback, and improve their manuscripts prior to (or in parallel with) journal submission.<\/p>\n<p>So what differentiates Research Square from other preprint servers? The focus is on \u201cadded value\u201d features such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Increased discoverability and readability due to indexed and machine-readable full text in HTML<\/li>\n<li>Commenting via a custom-built system or the <a href=\"https:\/\/web.hypothes.is\/\">hypothesis annotation tool<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Figure rendering with a lightbox, which allows for zooming and downloading<\/li>\n<li>Full metrics, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.altmetric.com\/\">Altmetrics<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dimensions.ai\/\">Dimensions<\/a> data<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchsquare.com\/researchers\/badges\">Research Square Badges<\/a> to indicate preprint quality<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchsquare.com\/researchers\/editing\">Editing services<\/a> to improve the manuscript prior to journal submission<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchsquare.com\/researchers\/promotion\">Video and infographic services<\/a> to help communicate the research<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!--more-->In addition, Research Square collaborates with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.springernature.com\/gp\/authors\/campaigns\/in-review\">Springer Nature<\/a> on a free preprint service that provides authors with the opportunity to have their manuscript posted online in conjunction with submission to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchsquare.com\/journals\">select journals<\/a>. This service, called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchsquare.com\/faq\/in-review\"><em>In Review<\/em><\/a>, gives authors and readers access to the manuscript status through a peer review timeline during the article review process by the selected journal.<\/p>\n<p>Research Square accepts many types of submissions: research articles, systematic reviews, methods articles, short reports, case reports, and data notes. The latter type is particularly compelling, as it provides an opportunity to post a brief write-up of a single dataset (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchsquare.com\/article\/rs-95721\/v1\">Data Note example<\/a>). All submissions are encouraged to include a Data Availability Statement documenting where to <a href=\"https:\/\/hsls.libguides.com\/datamanagement\/repositories\">locate the data<\/a>. Unacceptable submission types are literature reviews, hypotheses, opinions, theories, and commentaries, but manuscripts reporting negative results are included.<\/p>\n<p>Each posted preprint is published under a Creative Commons <a href=\"https:\/\/asapbio.org\/licensing-faq\">CC-BY 4.0 license<\/a> and assigned a Digital Object Identifier (DOI) issued through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crossref.org\/\">Crossref<\/a>. The community-supported scholarly content preservation repository, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.portico.org\/\">Portico<\/a>, permanently archives all content. In addition to preprints, Research Square posts protocols from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchsquare.com\/protocol-exchange\/about\">Protocol Exchange<\/a>, an open repository of community-contributed protocols sponsored by Nature Research.
