Information was current at time of publication.{"id":11447,"date":"2018-11-15T12:04:14","date_gmt":"2018-11-15T16:04:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/info.hsls.pitt.edu\/updatereport\/?p=11447"},"modified":"2018-12-05T10:28:39","modified_gmt":"2018-12-05T14:28:39","slug":"new-retraction-watch-database-recently-launched","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/info.hsls.pitt.edu\/updatereport\/new-retraction-watch-database-recently-launched\/","title":{"rendered":"New Retraction Watch Database Recently Launched"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In August of 2010, two longtime health journalists, Ivan Oransky and Adam Marcus, founded <a href=\"https:\/\/retractionwatch.com\/\">Retraction Watch<\/a>, \u201ca site dedicated to reporting on scientific retractions and related issues\u201d to bring to light how many scientific papers are withdrawn yearly and why.<\/p>\n<p>In their <a href=\"http:\/\/retractionwatch.com\/2010\/08\/03\/why-write-a-blog-about-retractions\/\">first post<\/a>, they quoted the following from a <a href=\"https:\/\/jme.bmj.com\/content\/34\/11\/807\">2008 paper in the <em>Journal of Medical Ethics<\/em><\/a> as support for why such a forum was needed:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cAlthough retractions are on average occurring sooner after publication than in the past, citation analysis shows that they are not being recognized by subsequent users of the work\u2026More aggressive means of notification to the scientific community appear to be necessary.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Oransky and Marcus also stated in their inaugural post:<!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe hope this blog will form an informal repository for the retractions we find, and might even spur the creation of a retraction database such as the one called for <a href=\"http:\/\/informahealthcare.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1185\/03007991003603804\">here<\/a> by K.M. Korpela.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>After many years of development, in <a href=\"https:\/\/retractionwatch.com\/2018\/10\/25\/were-officially-launching-our-database-today-heres-what-you-need-to-know\/\">October 2018<\/a>, such a database was indeed launched. <a href=\"http:\/\/retractiondatabase.org\/RetractionSearch.aspx?\">The Retraction Watch Database<\/a> does not just pull retractions from existing databases like PubMed or publishers&#8217; sites, rather it is a curated, searchable database of over 19,000 retractions (more than you will find elsewhere). Each record is assigned a <a href=\"https:\/\/retractionwatch.com\/retraction-watch-database-user-guide\/retraction-watch-database-user-guide-appendix-b-reasons\/\">reason(s)<\/a> for retraction, including concerns about data, conflict of interest, error in image, falsification\/fabrication of results, and misconduct.
