As of May 2017, NIH encourages citing preprints in proposals and progress reports (<a href=\"https:\/\/grants.nih.gov\/grants\/guide\/notice-files\/NOT-OD-18-011.html\">NOD Notice NOT-OD-18-011<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>Preprints fill a gap in current clinical knowledge. The need for the latest research is greatest during public health emergencies, when 12-month publisher embargoes can prevent critical research from reaching front-line clinicians. <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosmedicine\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pmed.1002549\">Johansson<\/a> reported \u201cthe proportion of preprints including original data increased substantially from 7% for Ebola (2014-16), to 46% for Zika (2015-17).\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Preprints identify and invite discussion with collaborators worldwide by making your research freely available.<\/li>\n<li>Some preprint servers, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/peerj.com\/preprints-search\/\">PeerJ Preprints<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/f1000research.com\/\">F1000Research<\/a>, host \u201copen peer review,\u201d inviting valuable commentary before or as part of journal submission.<\/li>\n<li>Both in-person and live-streamed journal clubs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5995539\/\">use preprints<\/a> to help early career researchers learn the art of peer review. Online journal club communities using preprints include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prereview.org\/\"><em>PREreviews<\/em><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prereview.org\/users\/164141\/articles\/301936-live-prereview-journal-clubs-liveprejc\">live-streamed PREreview Journal Clubs<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Finally, a large <a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/1604.05363\">comparative study<\/a> of preprints to their final published versions found \u201cno significant differences\u201d between the two, demonstrating that freely available preprints are an underutilized resource.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Where can preprint servers be found?
