ORCID.org is a non-profit global organization that developed and supports the <span style=\"color: #008000\"><strong>ORCID iD<\/strong><\/span>, a unique and persistent author identifier that recognizes an author\u2019s name and all variants throughout his or her career. An ORCID account is completely controlled by the author.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is the value of an ORCID iD to researchers? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>An <span style=\"color: #008000\"><strong>ORCID iD<\/strong><\/span> reliably links authors to their scholarly works, improving discoverability in databases and repositories. Automated submissions to publishers and funding agencies can save time and eliminate duplication.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Are <span style=\"color: #008000\">ORCID iDs<\/span> required by publishers and funding agencies? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000\"><strong>ORCID iDs<\/strong><\/span> are required by major science publishers, such as Springer Nature, Science, PLoS, eLife and BioMed Central, while mega-publishers Elsevier, Wiley, and Wolters Kluwer have also integrated ORCID into their submission systems. ProQuest (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.research.pitt.edu\/using-pivot-search-funding-opportunities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pivot<\/a>) sees ORCID as supporting \u201clinkages between researchers and their professional activities ensuring that their work is recognized and meaningful.&#8221; The <a href=\"https:\/\/orcid.org\/organizations\/integrators\/integration-chart\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">list<\/a> continues to grow.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>What is the <span style=\"color: #008000\">ORCID iD<\/span> initiative at the University of Pittsburgh? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>HSLS has partnered with ULS to bring the <span style=\"color: #008000\"><strong>ORCID iD<\/strong><\/span> to Pitt authors to enable reliable name disambiguation, and enhance discoverability and accurate attribution. The <span style=\"color: #008000\"><strong>ORCID iD<\/strong><\/span> can be added to Pitt\u2019s Faculty Information System (FIS) to make it easier to accurately import all types of scholarly works into FIS profiles to automate annual faculty reports and CVs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How can I sign up for an <span style=\"color: #008000\">ORCID iD<\/span>? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Register for a free <span style=\"color: #008000\"><strong>ORCID iD<\/strong><\/span> at <a href=\"https:\/\/orcid.pitt.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/orcid.pitt.edu\/<\/a><strong>,<\/strong> and remember to grant <a href=\"https:\/\/support.orcid.org\/knowledgebase\/articles\/131598\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trusted status<\/a> to Pitt.
