Attendance at MBIS workshops and consultations increased, primarily due to a heightened focus on data science and expanded bioinformatics sessions. New bioinformatics workshops covered topics such as single-cell multiomics and spatial data analysis. We expanded community engagement in bioinformatics education by mentoring a local high school student through the Office of Science Education Outreach, Health Sciences Research Training Program. The student completed a bioinformatics research project on the impact of a reverse transcriptase inhibitor on Alzheimer’s disease in mouse models, gaining hands-on experience with bioinformatics tools and databases to tackle complex scientific questions.<\/p>

Through collaboration with the Departments of Biomedical Informatics and Human Genetics, our team developed and delivered educational programs to help researchers effectively use the All of Us<\/em> (AoU) Research Program dataset. These initiatives provide researchers with the skills needed to investigate health disparities and develop strategies to improve health equity. Recognizing the complexities of working with AoU data, particularly the need for advanced Python and R programming skills, we offered targeted training, including a four-day lunchtime R bootcamp.<\/p>

We launched a comprehensive website<\/a> providing Pitt researchers with essential AoU program information, data access guidance, and training opportunities. To further support data analysis, we worked with Pitt IT to help researchers set up Google Cloud accounts for AoU research. Throughout the year, we hosted workshops on topics like the Researcher Workbench, EHR and Survey Data Analysis, and Genomics. Additionally, we developed an 8-week self-paced Canvas course<\/a> on probability and data analysis using R, offering hands-on learning with synthetic datasets.<\/p>

We also created Python and R code templates for association studies, made accessible via GitHub and Google Drive. Regular biweekly office hours were held to provide personalized guidance, and we taught two multi-week courses on translational biomedical analytics as part of the MD\/PhD Medical Scientist Training Program and Physician Scientist Training Program.<\/p>

In addition to strengthening our support for the NIH Data Management and Sharing Policy, our team made notable advancements in promoting open scholarship and enhancing research visibility.<\/p>

We participated in the campus-wide Faculty Information System RFP process, resulting in a decision to upgrade the existing Symplectic Elements System.\u00a0 Additionally, to assist faculty in understanding research impact, we launched the Citation Reports LibGuide<\/a>, to offer asynchronous support for faculty completing their promotion, tenure, and appointment portfolios\u201d. We partnered with health sciences administrators to create a publication report, using best practices for research assessment, to inform the decision of \u201ctop 10 papers published by PittMed faculty in the calendar year\u201d.<\/p>

Collaborating with the University Library System, we negotiated agreements<\/a> with Elsevier ScienceDirect and Wiley, allowing Pitt and UPMC authors to publish their research open access at no cost. We also launched the Open Scholarship and Research Impact Challenge<\/a> on Canvas. This initiative allows learners to earn digital badges, which they can showcase on platforms like LinkedIn. Key modules, including \u201cSharing Data and Code\u201d and \u201cCommunicating Scholarly Impact,\u201d equip researchers with the skills to enhance their open science practices. We continue to make significant contributions to research in the health sciences. This year, HSLS faculty co-authored nine published systematic reviews, with 66% appearing in Q1 journals (per Journal Citation Reports\u2122)\u2014top-tier publications known for their high citation impact.<\/strong><\/p>

Our Systematic Review Program saw a total of 45 requests for librarian assistance on systematic reviews and other evidence synthesis projects. The majority of these requests originated from the School of Medicine (35%) and UPMC residents\/fellows (31%).<\/p>

Librarians with expertise in research methods and critical appraisal provided formal scientific reviews for 24 evidence synthesis protocols and played an extensive role in another 24 ongoing evidence synthesis projects, offering consultations on topic refinement, database selection, literature searches, updating searches, processing search results, and assisting with manuscript preparation.\u00a0<\/p>
