Advanced Literature Searches<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Librarians design and build complex literature searches to support research within the health sciences. In FY 22, 240 literature searches were completed, with 55% requiring the use of more than one database (total number of databases searched = 430).<\/p>

The School of Medicine accounted for 35% of searches, followed by UPMC residents\/fellows (17%), School of Nursing (14%), School of Public Health (12%), School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences (12%), School of Dental Medicine (3%), and the School of Pharmacy (3%). The remaining 4% were searches completed for individuals outside the schools of the health sciences.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Two librarians serve as co-liaisons to the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC)\u2014regularly attending monthly committee meetings, offering trainings to researchers and committee members, and completing literature searches that are required in protocol submissions. Dr. Michael Pinsky from the Department of Critical Care Medicine noted that a literature search to support a modification of his IACUC protocol resulted in changes to the lab’s proposed procedures and model.<\/span><\/p>

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tLibrarians contributed work to 51 systematic review projects. As co-investigators on these complex research projects, librarians conducted in-depth discussions with investigators to assist in the creation or revision of project protocols; designed, built, and documented complex search strings for use in bibliographic databases; and assisted in the writing and editing of abstracts and manuscripts.\n\nThe Systematic Review Program received 59 requests for librarian assistance with new systematic review projects, averaging 4.9 requests per month. Faculty from the School of Medicine submitted 32% of requests, followed by faculty from the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences (31%), UPMC residents or fellows (25%), School of Public Health (8%), and the School of Nursing (3%). Sixteen consultations were provided to patrons on use of the systematic review software licensed by HSLS (DistillerSR).\n\nBeginning in February 2022, all submitted protocols were subject to internal review by two senior members of the SR Program, and patrons may be required to revise their protocols before an HSLS librarian is assigned to the review project. The purpose of this internal review<\/a> is to ensure that the protocol meets current standards for the design and conduct of complex reviews and contains the detailed topic information required for HSLS librarians to develop comprehensive literature searches.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

The Molecular Biology Information Service (MBIS) provides access to bioinformatics resources via software procurement, implementation, and training to assist biomedical scientists. MBIS teaches hands-on workshops and offers one-on-one or group consultations on multiple bioinformatics software covering next gen sequencing, genetic variation, Sanger sequence analysis, microarrays, gene regulation, pathways, and genes, proteins, and diseases.<\/p>

HSLS provided 13 commercial bioinformatics software and database packages, with 8,107 registered users. In FY 22, two additional seats of the next generation sequencing software Partek Flow were added. MBIS specialists offered 93 consults to support research within the health sciences, and 397 Pitt publications cited HSLS MBIS licensed software.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Librarians offer consultations and customized instruction to help organize and describe research data, to write data management and sharing plans, to preserve data for long-term access, and to locate data for reuse. Librarians in this service also oversee the Pitt Data Catalog<\/a>, which to date includes 97 records.<\/p>

Librarians collaborated with the Office of Sponsored Programs to prepare the health sciences research community to meet the requirements of the new NIH Policy for Data Management and Sharing. Additionally, they offered 20 consults on topics including locating specific datasets, writing data management and sharing plans, and citing data.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

HSLS supports dissemination of all types of research outputs including journal publications, preprints, protocols, datasets, and software. Librarians offer consultations and customized instruction on writing up and promoting research, open access publishing, and author rights.<\/p>

HSLS increased support for scholarly publishing and research impact, promoting a librarian to focus in this area. Librarians facilitated discussions with the Associate Deans of Research within the health sciences regarding tools for departmental publication reporting for annual reviews.
