Congratulations to Mary Jo Dorsey, reference librarian, who received the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Information Science Margaret Mary “Peg” Corbett Award for best dissertation proposal for the preceding year.

Welcome to Robert Rayschich who joins HSLS as a remote storage technician. His duties include processing requests for materials located in the library’s remote storage facility at Lexington Technology Park.

John Siegel, reference librarian, was elected as a representative to the University of Pittsburgh’s Faculty Assembly for a three-year term, beginning in July.

Congratulations to Fran Yarger, assistant director for Computing Services, who was awarded a Leadership Scholarship from the Association of Academic Health Sciences Libraries (AAHSL). She will apply this to support her attendance at the Association of American Medical Colleges Group on Information Resources Leadership Institute in Park City, Utah in July 2008.

Erlen also reviewed “Divide and Conquer: A Comparative History of Medical Specialization” by George Weisz, New York: Oxford University Press, 2006 in Canadian Journal of History, 2007, 62: 388-90.

Mary Lou Klem, reference librarian, published “Finding the Best Evidence, Part 2: The Basics of Literature Searches” in Journal of Emergency Nursing, 2008, 34:151-3 with co-author Terry Northcutt, School of Nursing, University of Pittsburgh.

John Siegel, reference librarian, published “Internet Resources: Testicular Cancer” in MLA News, 2008 Apr, 405:10.

Presentations

Linda Hartman, reference librarian, presented a poster “QoLT Mine: Creating a Knowledge Base” as part of the National Science Foundation Engineering Research Center site visit of the Quality of Life Technology (QoLT), Pittsburgh P.A. on March 26, 2008. Co-authors were Missy Harvey1, Roye Werner2, and Debbie Murphy3.

National Committees

Barbara Epstein, HSLS director, was elected to a 3-year term (2008-2011) on the steering committee of the Group on Information Resources of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC).

John Erlen, history of medicine librarian, was appointed to the program committee of the Southern Association for the History of Medicine and Science meeting.

Liping Song, electronic resources cataloging and access librarian, was appointed as co-chair for the Cooperative Online Serials Cataloging Program (CONSER) Standard Record (CSR) monitoring group. Song has been serving as a representative of CONSER since May 2007.

Nancy Tannery, associate director for User Services, was elected secretary of the Libraries in Medical Education (LiME), a special interest group, of the Northeastern Group on Educational Affairs of the AAMC for 2008-2009.
