News

Barbara Epstein, director, was appointed to a two-year term (2011-2013) as Co-Chair of the Future Leadership Committee of the Association of Academic Health Sciences Libraries.

Michele Klein-Fedyshin, reference librarian, has been appointed the Medical Library Association’s Hospital Library Section representative to the American Nurses Credentialing Center Magnet Conference for a four-year term.

Presentations

Melissa Ratajeski, reference librarian, presented a paper “By Librarians for Librarians: A Database to Share Biomedical Terminology and Strategies for Comprehensive Searches” at the Medical Library Association Mid Atlantic Chapter’s annual conference, in Richmond, VA on October 12, 2011.  Co-authors were Ahlam Saleh, reference librarian, and John LaDue, knowledge integration librarian.

Publications

Jonathon Erlen, history of medicine librarian published “Current Journal Articles on Disability History: Dissertations” in H-Disability: An H-Net Discussion Network, 126, November 1, 2011.

Reference Librarian Andrea Ketchum, along with co-authors N Shaikh1, RG Badgett2, M Pi3, NL Wilczynski4, KA McKibbon5, RB Haynes6 published “Development and Validation of Filters for the Retrieval of Studies of Clinical Examination from MEDLINE” in the Journal of Medical Internet Research, 13(4):e82, October 19, 2011.

Congratulations

Congratulations to the following HSLS employees who have reached their ten-year anniversary of University employment:  Kathryn DeVito, document delivery assistant; Robert Lucas, systems analyst; and Deborah Downey, library specialist at UPMC Shadyside.

Classes January–February 2012

HSLS offers classes on database searching, software applications such as Adobe Photoshop, bibliographic management, molecular biology and genetics, and library orientations. For more information visit the online course descriptions.

Classes are held on the first floor of Falk Library (200 Scaife Hall) in Classroom 1 and Conference Room B, and on the second floor in the Computer and Media Center Classroom 2. Some classes are also held in the Conference Room at UPMC Shadyside Libraries. All classes are open to faculty, staff and students of the schools of the health sciences at the University of Pittsburgh and UPMC.

No registration is required for any of these classes. Seating for classes is first-come, first-served, until the class is full. Classes marked with an asterisk (*) qualify for American Medical Association Category 2 continuing education credit.
